SA YJR Continue Podium Surge At State Champs

Round three of the South Australian Motocross Championships headed to Gillman (MRA) club in Adelaide with perfect conditions for the riders. The SA GYTR Yamaha Junior Racing team came into the round hoping to keep the momentum going from round two with Thomas Larwood and Taj Gow-Smith in good form but the team was down one rider with Alex Larwood sidelined with an injured collar bone.

Thomas Larwood came to Gillman looking to build his points lead in the 13-15years 250cc class. The first moto seen him miss the start but he would push through for a solid second place and a good start to the day. He nailed the starts for races two and three then lead every lap for the remainder of the day to see him take 2-1-1 moto scores to take the overall for the round.

Thomas rode well and the rougher the track got, the more comfortable he looked.

"Today was great, I missed the start in moto one and struggled a little with lines but I really focussed on the second race and was able to holeshot and hold on for the win, then much the same in the final moto. My bike handled the conditions awesome today and it’s good to get the win today,” said Thomas.

Taj Gow-Smith Was determined to get himself onto the podium in the 12-15 years 85cc class, especially with the absence of Alex Larwood. Taj came out swinging in moto one with a huge holeshot and pushed hard in the early stages. He battled determinedly but dropped a couple of spots to third by the end of the race but it was a personal best finish form him since moving up to the Big Wheel 85 class.

Moto two saw another big holeshot but this time he came under fire and tightened up a little and dropped back to fourth for the moto. The final moto he missed the start but came out in third place and tried to lock down a podium position. He dropped back to fourth but found some new lines mid moto, passing back into third in the later stages and secure third for the round with 3-4-3 results.

“I am so happy today to get my first podium on the big wheel,” said an excited Gow-Smith. A huge thanks to my parents for taking me down to train with Metty as what we worked on helped today.

“We wanted this podium and now I want more. My bike was unreal today, I’m pumped with this result,” he ends.

SA Team Manager Shane Metcalfe was impressed with the two boys today and how things are placed leading into the fourth round in the coming weeks.

“Thomas really pushed today and earnt his wins. He had to absorb a lot of pressure from his rivals but he kept a cool head and handled it really well. I am stoked with his progress this year.

“Taj rode great today. We still have a couple of bad habits to get out of him but that is the best I have seen him ride. I am very proud of both the boys today not just because of the result but how they fought for every positon.

It was tough seeing Alex watching on today, but he showed what a great team player he is by helping all day and cheering on his team mates,” commented Metcalfe.

The next round will be held at the Andy Caldecott Park track at Keith on the 22 July.
